I bought a Jade plant day before yesterday a day before yesterday (6 august 2026), well if you know anything about me then you can tell it was not a planned decision it was out of my whims, i don’t know what triggered that thought, i was just looking for some room decor online (tapestries and posters), then i thought of buying a plant and guess what i bought it i looked for a plant to buy and i saw a jade plant i also wanted to buy a bamboo too but it wasnt the the type of plant that grow in soil it needed water so i asked my friend and i was like ok lets get a a jade plant.
She arrived almost instantly (yeah, I’m calling her she), and there she was, my baby jade plant. She was so small; I mean, still is, but she’s so cute it feels fatherly. I want to take care of her.
She has a name; it’s called JIVA. It’s derived from the Sanskrit word JIVAN, which means life. Well, I just thought that the thing is living, so why not just name it something based off of the word life itself? I was searching all the words for life in Greek, Norse, English, and Sanskrit, but the Sanskrit word jivan stuck with me, so I named her that.
Here is a childhood story about my connection with plants, I was very small i dont know how old i was maybe 9 or 10, One night i was alone in my home my parents were out and i dont remember where was my sister, That night i was feeling a bit scared and anxious but i remember i had this one marigold Seedling planted in a small cup made out of paper, i was with that Seedling for few hours till my parents arrived, it was soo soothing and comforting just by being in the presence of that seedling, The feeling was so intense that after all these years i still remember that moment.
My life has changed a bit after Jiva, She is a responsibility and i have to take care of her she has to see son for 4-5 hours a day and the flat where i am at the sun is availible for like first few hours in the morning so i have to get up early and place her in the balcony because if you wake up late then she will not get enough sun and i dont want that, if you ask me well then why not just keep her outside 24 hours?, The answer is it’s rainy season here in India, and Jade plants can be harmed if you give them too much water. So keeping her outside is a gamble that I’m not willing to risk at all.
She has made my life better; even a thought of her comforts me. When I think there is a literal living being that I am attached to, it makes me feel happy, and this connection is not shallow; there is no cunningness, deception, or motives involved when I am sitting on the balcony with her; it’s just a pure, beautiful bond between two living beings.
